About this painting
Shadow is one of the most important elements of my work. It appears in almost every painting and often dominates the composition. But I don't think of it as emptiness, or as an absence of light. For me, it is in shadow that you can see more. It is a space that holds what isn't always visible at first glance.
Color gathers around the shadow. To me it is a record of moments, of the presence of people and the energy they bring with them. Every person carries their own emotions and energy — good, bad, calm, intense, sometimes hard to name. In my paintings I try to draw that energy out and show it through color.
That is why shadow and color are not opposites in my work. They exist side by side and strengthen one another. The shadow holds the attention; the color reveals what is happening around it.
"In Between" is part of the way I look at the world — a search for what lies between the visible and the felt.
